LACUNA: noun [luh-kyoo-nuh]

“An unfilled space or interval; A gap.  A blank space or missing part”

Depth-Oriented Trauma Therapy for Thoughtful & Neurodivergent Adults

French composer Claude Debussy wrote that “music is the space between the notes.” Therapy can feel similar - real change often happens in the spaces between roles, identities, and long-standing adaptations.

Many thoughtful and sensitive adults learn early how to function well in the world. They become capable, reliable, even high-performing. Yet underneath, there may be a complex inner world that has been managed, compartmentalized, or quietly ignored.

At Lacuna Counseling, I offer depth-oriented, trauma-informed therapy for adults across Ohio who want more than symptom management. Integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS), Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR), and somatic therapy, my work focuses on helping you reconnect the parts of yourself that adapted in order to survive - and build greater internal coherence and freedom

My Commitment

At Lacuna Counseling, I work with adults who have often felt different - perceptive in ways that aren’t always understood, emotionally attuned, creatively wired, or neurodivergent in a world that prefers sameness.

Many of my clients have mastered functioning. They meet expectations. They think deeply. They care intensely. Yet internally, they may feel out of place, burned out, self-critical, or disconnected from their own rhythms.

My approach integrates Internal Family Systems, somatic therapy, Deep Brain Reorienting, and creative process to help you:

• Understand how your system adapted to fit environments that may not have fit you
• Work with protective patterns that once helped but now restrict you
• Address developmental stress and trauma at the nervous system level
• Strengthen self-leadership rather than internal pressure
• Reclaim permission to inhabit your full complexity

This work is steady, collaborative, and grounded in advanced trauma training. The goal is not to make you more efficient - but more integrated and authentically yourself.

Hi! I'm Katie

am a licensed professional counselor providing specialized trauma and somatic therapy for adults throughout Ohio.

I’m especially drawn to working with thoughtful, creative, and neurodivergent adults who have long sensed they experience the world differently. Many function well outwardly while carrying an intricate inner life that has rarely been fully seen or supported.

My work integrates somatic psychotherapy, Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR), and Internal Family Systems. Rather than pathologizing difference, we examine how your nervous system adapted over time - and gently reorganize patterns that lead to chronic overdrive, masking, or emotional exhaustion.

Therapy becomes a space where the parts of you that have been managing alone no longer have to.

My work integrates somatic therapy, Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR), and parts work. We focus on understanding how your system adapted - and gently supporting it toward something more sustainable.

What does a session with me look like?

Wwork together as collaborative partners in exploring your internal landscape.

Each session begins by identifying what feels most alive or activated. From there, we may:

• Engage parts work (IFS) to understand internal divisions and protective strategies
• Use creative process to access experiences that exist beyond words
• Track nervous system responses through somatic therapy techniques
• Explore relational patterns and long-standing identity adaptations

This process is deliberate and experiential. Depth-oriented trauma therapy is not about fixing you - it is about helping previously compartmentalized parts of your system move toward greater connection and coherence.

The hope is that you will walk away each time with something to chew on from our experience, and that you will feel inspired to do exploration between our sessions. I will help you connect to:

Your truth

Your inner and

outer world

Your inherent

healing potential

The services below are not exhaustive, but illustrative of my trauma-informed, integrated clinical framework. Additional areas of focus are available in the main navigation menu.

Art Therapy

Art has the remarkable ability to heal and illuminate the depths of our inner worlds. Through painting, drawing, sculpting, and collage, I offer you a vibrant palette of art materials and techniques to explore and communicate your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

DBR Therapy

When you understand your patterns but still feel something stuck beneath the surface, DBR helps you slow down and work with the part of your nervous system that learned to brace.

Grounded in neuroscience, DBR tracks what happens in the body first - before thoughts or even emotions take over. Working at this early level is a gentle yet powerful way to process experiences that may never have been fully completed.

Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety can show up in many forms - racing thoughts, muscle tension, trouble sleeping, or a constant feeling of unease. It might feel like your mind is always scanning for danger or that you’re never quite able to relax. In therapy, we’ll explore how anxiety functions in your life and what it may be trying to protect you from, using a compassionate and non-pathologizing lens.

Rather than trying to eliminate anxiety altogether, our work together will help you build a relationship with it—one where you can understand its patterns, reduce its intensity, and regain a sense of internal safety. Whether your anxiety stems from past trauma, sensory overload, or chronic stress, I offer a supportive space to slow down, reconnect with your body, and begin to trust yourself again.

Depression Therapy

Depression can manifest in many ways—feeling persistently sad, numb, or disconnected, losing interest in activities once enjoyed, or struggling to find motivation. It might feel like you're stuck in a dark place with no way out, and every day feels like a heavy burden. In therapy, we’ll explore the roots of your depression, using a compassionate and non-judgmental approach.

Rather than focusing on eliminating depression, our work will help you develop a healthier relationship with it—understanding its triggers, reducing its impact, and creating a sense of hope. Whether your depression stems from past experiences, stress, or overwhelming life changes, I offer a safe and supportive space to reconnect with yourself and begin the healing process.

Somatic Therapy

Stressful and traumatic experiences don’t just live in memory - they are stored in the body and nervous system. Hakomi therapy is a mindfulness-based, somatic approach that helps you gently access and transform the unconscious patterns shaped by early experiences and relational stress.

Through present-moment awareness and guided somatic exploration, we slow down and study how your body organizes around old beliefs and protective strategies. By working experientially - rather than only through conversation - Hakomi allows deeper material to surface safely, supporting lasting change and increased self-coherence.

Internal Family Systems Therapy

Uncover the emotional wounds, sensory experiences, and damaging beliefs that have been holding you back. With IFS therapy, you'll learn to identify, communicate, and build relationships with these parts, fostering harmony and balance within.

Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or addiction, I use a non-judgmental and non-pathologizing philosophy that emphasizes on self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-acceptance.

Autism Therapy

Navigating the world as a neurodivergent person can feel confusing, exhausting, and at times, isolating. Autism therapy offers a space where you don’t have to mask or explain yourself - where your experience is understood and honored just as it is.

In our sessions, we’ll explore how your unique way of thinking, feeling, and relating affects your day-to-day life and relationships. Whether you're feeling burned out from masking, anxious in social situations, or simply craving a space to be your full self, therapy can help. I provide an accepting, neurodiversity-affirming environment where you can unmask safely, explore your strengths, and learn tools to support your nervous system and communication style - on your terms.
